A Child’s First Catechist
“When you bring a child into the world, you have to be aware of this: we are responsible for making the faith of this child grow.”
– Pope Francis
Edwyn and Karen de Souza recognise the greatest gift that they can gift to their two boys, the gift of Jesus.
“Are you prepared to accept children lovingly from God and to bring them up according to the law of Christ and his Church?”
As couples stand before God and the congregation, they are quick to acknowledge their acceptance of the gift of children in their lives. But what does it really mean to be a parent?
In this video, Edwyn and Karen share about the way in which they try to impart the faith to their two boys, David and Joshua. For the de Souzas, what has helped bridge the relationship between the two generations, has been the spirit of openness, vulnerability, and acceptance. Instead of hiding their struggles, they bring things to the light and surrender it in the midst of the family. As Edwyn puts it, “We show up, and we be real.”
“As parents, we need to be desperately desirous of giving Jesus to our children. If that desire is not there, we give them everything except the real thing and the real gift, that is Jesus.”
– Edwyn de Souza
