Frustrated Photographer Stumbles on Gold

Frustrated Photographer Stumbles on Gold

On Wednesday 13 September 2017, I was part of the VITA Images team which covered the main event of The International Centennial Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima at St Joseph’s Institution (SJI). When I reached SJI, I have been working non-stop for close to 12 hours.

As the evening went on, I was increasingly frustrated as I was unable to capture any ideal shots. I was concerned that I will not have anything to deliver at the end of event. I decided to stop taking photos during the Eucharistic Celebration and just be present.

As I walked around hoping to be inspired, I saw the congregation praying fervently and sincerely; with their eyes closed and beads of perspiration trickling down their cheeks. Their attention and devotion touched something within me.

Still, I could not get any good shot of the altar or Archbishop from my angle. I was getting desperate.

In trial or difficulty I have recourse to Mother Mary, whose glance alone is enough to dissipate every fear
–  St Therese of Lisieux

During the candlelight procession and as the crowd prayed the five Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, I followed the statue of Our Lady. From my angle, I saw Our Mother Mary was walking among the people, her children. And I could also get a good shot of Her!

Thank you, Mother for the perfect light, perfect timing. Mother Mary together with the congregation’s “little light”.

At the end of the procession, I was given permission to go up the altar to see other angles I could capture. The image below is one of my favourites of the night.

“No one can come to my Father except through Me.” John 14:6

I did what I could and I fought a good fight – when our Lady was walking towards me, the light and timing was just nice. At the end of the night, I had no more frustration, no more disappointment, but was filled with joy. Prayers are real. Jesus is real!

Through the talents that God have given me, I hope these images can help you to enter into prayer and have a greater love for our Dearest Mother and her Son, Jesus.

Thank you dear Mother for your prayers and intercession! All honour and glory belongs to Him!
